How to Find a Responsible Rescue in Alberta

Written by Rachel Cote, Director of Programs

Adopting a pet or choosing where to donate your hard-earned dollars is a big decision. You want to be confident that animals are cared for properly, that your support makes a meaningful impact, and that the organization operates ethically. Here are some tips to help you find a responsible rescue in Alberta!

Start with Trusted Networks

One of the best ways to identify a responsible rescue is to look for organizations connected to trusted networks. In Alberta, the Animal Welfare Coalition of Alberta (AWCAB) brings together shelters, rescues and humane societies that follow shared standards for animal care, governance and operations. Membership in a coalition like this signals that a rescue is committed to ethical practices and ongoing accountability.

Ask the Right Questions

When evaluating a rescue, asking the right questions can help you determine if they are the right fit for what you’re looking for. Consider the following:

  • Where are your animals housed and what standards and policies guide your animal care? Ensure the organization maintains adequate staff and volunteer levels for the number of animals in care.
  • What veterinary care is provided and by whom? Animals should be seen by a licensed veterinarian at least once and it is standard for vaccines, deworming, spay/neuter and any required medical care to be completed before adoption.
  • What is your adoption process, and how do you match pets with homes? Organizations should have a thorough screening process to match the pet’s needs with families, without being overly intrusive.
  • Do you provide behaviour support? Providing animals with behaviour support before adoption and providing resources and support after adoption are highly recommended to give the best chances of a successful adoption.
  • Where do your animals come from? Do you have formal partnerships with local authorities?
  • What records are shared with adopters? Medical history, vaccination records and behavioural notes should be provided, while also clarifying that behaviours and health can evolve over time.

Detailed questions like these can help you determine the rescue’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and long-term animal welfare.

Look for Transparency and Impact

Transparency is a key marker of a reputable rescue. This means being clear not only about care practices but also about finances, operations and program outcomes. Look for rescues that:

  • Operate a formal website with information about the organization, contact details, programs, adoptable pets, etc.
  • Publish annual reports showing how donations are used.
  • Highlight the impact of programs (annual intake and adoptions, for example) and local animal welfare initiatives.

An organization that is transparent and accountable is much more likely to be focused on making a real difference for animals. Charitable status can be a good indicator, but is not always a make or break for a reputable organization. There are many great rescues without charitable status and there are also unreliable rescues with it.

Check Reputation and Track Record

Investigate how long the rescue has been operating, how they handle challenges and what their reputation is in the community. Local forums, reviews, social media and Animal Welfare Coalition of Alberta resources can provide insights into a rescue’s practices and success stories!

Choose a Rescue You Can Trust

Ultimately, a responsible rescue is one that demonstrates care, accountability, transparency and solid processes at every stage from intake to adoption. Whether you’re adopting, donating or volunteering, you should feel confident in your involvement and knowing that the organization is committed to the animals’ well-being.
