Membership in a coalition like this signals that a rescue is committed to ethical practices and ongoing accountability.
Ask the Right Questions
When evaluating a rescue, asking the right questions can help you determine if they are the right fit for what you’re looking for. Consider the following:
- Where are your animals housed and what standards and policies guide your animal care? Ensure the organization maintains adequate staff and volunteer levels for the number of animals in care.
- What veterinary care is provided and by whom? Animals should be seen by a licensed veterinarian at least once and it is standard for vaccines, deworming, spay/neuter and any required medical care to be completed before adoption.

- Do you provide behaviour support? Providing animals with behaviour support before adoption and providing resources and support after adoption are highly recommended to give the best chances of a successful adoption.

- What records are shared with adopters? Medical history, vaccination records and behavioural notes should be provided, while also clarifying that behaviours and health can evolve over time.
Detailed questions like these can help you determine the rescue’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and long-term animal welfare.
