P/T Behaviour Coordinator

AARCS is looking for a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (or working toward the designation) to  join our team to support rehabilitation and training for rescue dogs, foster homes and volunteers at our Calgary facility.

LOCATION: AARCS Safe Haven Shelter in Calgary, 5060 – 74 Ave SE, Calgary

THE ROLE: The Behaviour Coordinators work closely with other departments within AARCS to share information and provide support, education and practical tools to ensure foster homes, volunteers and adopters have a positive experience.  The department’s aim is to ensure AARCS animals are provided with the enrichment they need while in the shelter, are assessed and are placed in appropriate foster and adoptive homes and provided with on-going training support. In addition, our Behaviour Coordinator educates AARCS foster homes, volunteers and staff on relevant behavioural topics.

 

ABOUT YOU: The Behaviour Coordinator is a special breed of animal lover.  Having both a love of people and animals, you are naturally optimistic, positive, friendly, and approachable.  You enjoy working with dogs and their humans in a positive way to facilitate positive outcomes. You are internally motivated to see every animal find emotional and behavioural balance so they can live in harmony with their guardians. You are confident, open minded and non-judgmental with an intuitive ability to see possibilities.  Your strengths include implementation of rehabilitation and training programs for dogs.  You love problem-solving behavioural concerns to increase adoptability. You take great personal satisfaction from every successful rehabilitation. Organization and attention to detail is important to you. You have exceptional teamwork skills and are able to work closely with others, including managing and overseeing a team of volunteers. Your lifestyle allows you to regularly and consistently maintain a flexible work schedule including some travel for in-home consultations, or occasional evenings and weekends.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  1. High School diploma or equivalency.
  2. Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed through Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers OR currently working toward the designation.
  3. Minimum one-year experience working with dogs in a professional capacity.
  4. Genuine interest in animal welfare with thorough understanding of dog behaviour.
  5. Highly developed cooperation, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  6. Moderate level of office software proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Email, Google Docs and databases.
  7. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  8. Exceptional organizational skills and able to manage a diverse case-load.
  9. Requires minimal supervision yet remains highly accountable for reporting.
  10.  Valid driver’s license for on and off site work.
  11.  Personable and able to develop a positive rapport with a variety of experiences and backgrounds.
  12. Self-motivated; has the ability to set priorities and manage workloads with minimal supervision.

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Work alongside the other Behaviour Coordinators and dog program staff on all aspects of the program as it relates to dog behaviour.
  • Maintain and consistently look for ways to improve to ensure the quality of care for animals at the shelter, including stress reduction and enrichment.
  • Complete behavioural assessments on dogs.
  • Provide on-going training for volunteers and foster homes.
  • Increase adoptability of dogs through behavioural modification and training.
  • Manage, track and fully document behavioural cases.
  • Utilize, supervise, train and develop volunteers to assist with behaviour department duties.
  • Work directly with foster homes in their homes with the dogs; may require traveling outside the City of Calgary on occasion.
  • Assist adopters with behaviour or training concerns after adoption by providing advice over phone and email or suggesting training options available in their area.
  • Develop training related documents, training sessions and handouts for volunteers, staff, and adopters as well as for social media and the website.
  • Issue timely and complete reports monthly.

 

Details:

Schedule: Flexible – 25 hours/week.

Hourly Rate: $19-22/hour based on experience

Seeking an emerging leader in Human Resources who has a love of people and animals to help oversee the HR function for AARCS staff.

 

THE POSITION: The HR Administrator role provides a variety of staffing and program support services to AARCS’ leaders and personnel. The role is highly relational and focuses on the timely and accurate administration of tasks and functions including proper documentation, and the consistent, safe and fair application of human resources practices. 

 

Functional areas of responsibility include: all aspects of the employee lifecycle (brand attraction and culture, employee relations; recruitment, selection, onboarding, development, performance management, retention, and offboarding), legislative compliance, benefit administration, assisting with payroll services, and assisting with the OHS program requirements. The role is aimed at optimizing practices, process and workflow in a dynamic change-rich work environment. 

 

DUTIES

  • Employeecommunications, data collection, document handling and processing.
  • Recruit, screen, schedule and confirm interviews with shortlisted candidates.
  • Support a seamless onboarding/offboarding process of employees, conduct exit interviews and assist managers with yearly performance reviews. 
  • Support employee engagement initiatives and implementation of new technologies.
  • Collect information for Payroll – requested time off and payable hours.
  • Ensure OH&S requirements have been met. 
  • Ensure employee policies, handbooks and SOP’s are up-to-date. 
  • Assist with employee benefits administration, policy management, employee relations.
  • Prepare employment verification letters as requested, order flowers, arrange team lunches and culture building practices.
  • Prepare HR related reports as requested and other duties as assigned.

 

KEY SKILLS, ABILITIES & ATTRIBUTES:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 2 years post-secondary education in HR, Administration and/or Business, with or pursuing CPHR. 
  • 2-3 years of hands-on experience and an emerging Human Resource leader with similar responsibilities.

Program Support Administrator - Calgary

THE POSITION:  We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly-organized, animal-loving administrator to assist staff and volunteers to keep our dog, cat and critter program running smoothly and efficiently at our Calgary shelter, helping to find over 4,000 animals new loving homes each year. Reporting to the Stakeholder Relations Manager, the Program Support Administrator supports the functioning of AARCS programs by writing website biographies for animals in shelter, working with the adoption team to facilitate adoptions of dogs, cats and small animals onsite, data entry and database management.

DUTIES

  • Write and submit bios and photographs for animals in shelter that are cleared for adoption.
  • Review and edit bio submissions for animals before they are added to the website. 
  • Perform regularly scheduled database audits to ensure accuracy in animals file, statistics and appropriate follow up. 
  • Data entry and required, including licensing,  foster communication notes and behaviour clearances. 
  • Assist cat, dog and critter adoptions teams with screening potential applicants and facilitating adoption applications for animals in shelter.  
  • Oversee administration of Spay Neuter Assistance Program files, including entered data into Pet Point database and reporting statistics. 
  • Assist with facilitating the Food Assistance Program in Calgary.  
  • Support Compassionate Care Program as requested by management. 
  • Assist with coverage for reception, as needed.  
  • Provide animal care support when requested by program staff. 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Genuine interest in animal welfare.
  • Three years administrative experience. 
  • Creative writing skills for writing animal bios for their adoption profiles. 
  • Highly proficient in computers including Microsoft, email, website, database experience, typing skills. Experience with Petpoint considered an asset. 
  • Confident to handle animals. 
  • Excellent verbal, written communication and interview skills.
  • Maintain the highest standard of accuracy, professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Diligent attention to detail, strong organizational abilities, and time management skills are required
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

THE POSITION: We are looking for a full-time and part-time RVT to join our team of 12 veterinary professionals at AARCS Veterinary Hospital in Calgary. Working with our onsite Veterinarians and the Medical Team, the position is responsible for patient care of our rescued animals including dogs, cats and some small animals. The position includes assisting with  surgery, anesthesia (preparation, monitoring, and recovery), dentistry, radiology, emergency medicine, pathology and laboratory sampling and handling. AARCS Veterinary hospital is a fast-paced, fun environment, which includes high volume spay/neuter surgery.   5. Confident and diligent in surgical preparation, patient monitoring and recovery for various surgical procedures.
