How to Enjoy Safe Off-Leash Adventures

One of the most enjoyable things for a dog is the freedom to adventure without a leash! This gives them ample opportunity to run, play and sniff to their heart’s content – something that many city dogs don’t get to do every day, especially if they don’t have a fenced backyard. But what do you do when you’re worried about your dog having a negative experience at an off-leash area?

Public off-leash parks can be a good option for responsible dog owners with friendly, well-socialized and non-confrontational dogs; however, they come with the inherent risk of a poor interaction with other dogs or even people. You never know what other dogs will be there and if they will get along with your dog. Quite often, you’ll see dogs who are on a leash because they don’t play well or don’t have good recall; you may even see dogs wearing muzzles because they tend to interact teeth-first (or maybe they just like to eat things they shouldn’t!) While leashes and muzzles are not bad tools when used appropriately, they can quickly become a point of frustration for many dogs at off-leash areas.

Most dogs are what we call ‘Dog Selective’, which just means they’re picky about their doggy friends. This is perfectly normal – you might be human selective, too! However, it means that public off-leash parks might not be the best environment for stress-free exercise and enrichment opportunities for your dog.

Luckily, Calgary and surrounding areas have several private off-leash parks that are perfect for some safe, worry-free fun! For a small fee, you can access a private, fully fenced area for your dog (and maybe a trusted friend or two) to run and play. Some of these parks feature trees, obstacles and even water features for your dog to enjoy! The beauty of private off-leash areas is that you do not need to worry about unfamiliar dogs.

Here are some options for private off-leash parks around Calgary:

East on Highway 22X

DeWinton

Rocky View

Prices vary depending on the park, the amount of time you want to book and the available amenities. You can book online and the parks are open year-round.

You can also check out Sniffspot for privately owned areas, including farmland, acreages and even fenced backyards! These generally cost less than the dedicated private off-leash parks, but may not carry the same policies or protections as a licensed business and may not be fully fenced. Sniffspot also charges in USD.
