AARCS Veterinary Hospital is a fast-paced, high volume clinic designed specifically to help rescued animals. Our team of experienced veterinarians, technicians, assistants and support staff ensure the animals are provided with the highest standard of medical care. The hospital is fully equipped allowing our team to perform a variety of treatments on a daily basis.
THE ROLE: This role is responsible for supporting our skilled team of Veterinarians. Having both a love of people and animals, you are naturally optimistic, positive, friendly, and approachable. POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Provide medical care to shelter and foster animals (primarily cats, dogs, guinea pigs and rabbits), including physical examinations, diagnostics, medical rounds, and treatments under the guidance of Veterinarians, while ensuring safe handling of animals with behavioral concerns.
- Perform pre-medication, induction, intubation, and monitoring of anesthesia for surgical procedures, and respond to anesthetic emergencies with proficiency and care.
- Conduct high-volume surgical preparation, monitoring, recovery, and sterilization wrap packing to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
- Administer treatments, injections, and medications, and provide supportive care for hospitalized and isolated animals, adhering to strict disease prevention protocols.
- Perform comprehensive diagnostics, including radiographs, bloodwork, urinalysis, fecals, cytology, and ultrasounds, oral health assessments, diagnostic dental radiographs, and dental charting.
- Educate foster parents and adopters on animal health, including prescription medication usage and general wellness.
- Maintain accurate medical records in coordination with veterinary staff, entering data daily into electronic systems such as PetPoint.
- Collaborate with Veterinarians, Veterinary Technologist Assistants, and volunteers to deliver a high standard of care, maximizing resources while minimizing costs.
- Perform clinic husbandry tasks, including cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining equipment and facilities.
- Ensure compliance with quarantine and sanitation protocols to manage and prevent contagious diseases.
- Support scheduling, phone inquiries, and operational needs for surgeries, examinations, and rechecks.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Licensed RVT in the province of Alberta.
- Must be in good standing with the ABVMA.
- Minimum three years of surgical experience is preferred.
- Experience in animal welfare/shelter environment is considered an asset.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Hospital environment within a busy animal shelter with a moderate to loud noise level.
- The position involves exposure to dangerous and/or diseased animals.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and up to 120 lbs with assistance.

THE ROLE: Reporting to the Director of Animal Health, this position is responsible for the coordination of the Compassionate Care program, providing assistance with scheduling, accounting support, administration and general inquiries for the hospital, and the overall support of the veterinary hospital staff and volunteers.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Coordinate the Compassionate Care program (veterinary care for client pets) with the support of the Director.
- Coordinate outsourced veterinary appointment scheduling, including working collaboratively with outside clinics and arranging medical care for patients in Edmonton.
- Assisting with scheduling, accounting support, administration and general inquiries for the hospital. Verify animals are medically cleared for adoption and send weekly vaccination reminders to foster homes. Ensure veterinary hospital paper files are maintained. Facilitate bi-weekly PetPoint audits to ensure accuracy and process flow, and maintain various department spreadsheets. .
- Manage tracking and reporting on monthly statistics for the veterinary hospital, Compassionate Care and Critter Program. Alongside the Director, manage oversight of day-to-day operations and regulatory requirements, including Dosimeter badges, licensing, staff training, volunteer coordination, equipment inventory, maintenance and replacement.
- Develop and implement an effective inventory control system to ensure that necessary office and medical supplies are ordered in a timely manner. Coordinate critter program supplies, including ordering and distribution of supplies to foster homes. Ensure Critter shelter space is in order and husbandry duties as needed.
- Support veterinary hospital staff with answering the phone line.
- Prepare Physical Exam Sheets for pre-scheduled foster appointments and new intakes.
- Perform high volume data entry of medical records into electronic form.
- Ensure timely entries of all previous medical records for public intakes, City of Calgary Animal Services and/or outsourced medical records.
- Work collaboratively with the veterinary hospital staff and volunteers.
- Assist with animal handling as needed in the veterinary hospital and other tasks as assigned.
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Degree or diploma in business or veterinary medicine field, i.e. RVT, VTA, VOTA preferred.
- Minimum three years in a business environment or a veterinary clinic or hospital considered an asset.
- Experience in animal welfare/shelter environments is considered an asset.

THE ROLE: The Behaviour Coordinator is responsible for overseeing a portfolio of behaviour cases, including implementing training plans, supporting fosters and working directly with the dogs. In addition, part of the responsibility for all Behaviour Coordinators is to provide ongoing education for foster homes and volunteers. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Work collaboratively with other Behaviour Coordinators on all aspects of the dog behaviour program.
- Maintain, evaluate, and continuously improve behaviour and enrichment programs to ensure high standards of care, stress reduction, and overall wellbeing for dogs in shelter care.
- Complete behavioural assessments on dogs and develop individualized behaviour plans to support their progress and adoptability.
- Record and maintain detailed notes and updates in PetPoint, ensuring all behavioural information is current and accurately documented.
- Collaborate closely with other department team members to support the enrichment and behaviour needs of all dogs in shelter care.
- Work directly with foster homes, including in-home visits as needed (may require travel outside the City of Calgary).
- Provide ongoing training, guidance, and support to volunteers and foster homes involved in the behaviour program.
- Increase adoptability of dogs through targeted behavioural modification, training, and enrichment strategies.
- Manage, track, and fully document behavioural cases, ensuring timely follow-up and coordination with other departments as needed.
- Build and maintain relationships with external partners, such as dog trainers, training facilities, and behaviour specialists, to expand available resources and strengthen post-adoption support.
- Utilize, supervise, train, and mentor volunteers to assist effectively with behaviour department duties.
- Support adopters with post-adoption behaviour or training concerns by providing advice via phone and email, or referring to appropriate local resources and training options.
- Develop and update training materials, including documents, handouts, and presentations for volunteers, staff, and adopters, as well as content for social media and the website.
- Assist the Director of Programs with other related tasks as assigned.
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed through Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CPDT) OR currently working toward the designation is considered an asset but not required.
- Minimum one-year experience working with dogs in a professional capacity and/or shelter environment.

THE ROLE: The Intake & Community Programs Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing the intake of animals into the organization and overseeing our SNAP and TNR initiatives. You have a natural ability to connect with people and are friendly, approachable, and able to provide exceptional service while remaining open-minded and non-judgmental. A strong understanding of animal behaviour, health, and population management is essential in supporting both the intake process and community-based programming. You are organized and capable of prioritizing and coordinating multiple moving parts. You’re able to maintain a flexible schedule and are willing to accommodate intakes based on program needs.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Coordinate and manage all aspects of intake, including surrenders, transfers, and community requests.
- Collaborate with the Director of Animal Health to coordinate the intake of high medical needs animals.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute a monthly community day or outreach events, particularly with partner First Nation communities, to strengthen relationships, provide support, and promote AARCS programs.
- Ensure all paperwork and medical records are received for intakes and collaborate with shelter/foster teams to ensure adequate space is assigned for incoming animals.
- Oversee the Food Assistance Program, including volunteer coordination, inventory management, client communications, and ensuring clients receive timely and compassionate support.
- Coordinate the Compassionate Care program in conjunction with the Animal Health department.
- Coordinate SNAP (Spay/Neuter Assistance Program) in collaboration with the volunteer SNAP Coordinator, including helping with client communication, appointment scheduling, and pick up.
- Plan and coordinate TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) operations, including trapping, scheduling surgeries, and providing post-operative support.
- Recruit, onboard, train, and support volunteers involved in SNAP, TNR, and community efforts, providing ongoing guidance and engagement.
- Assist with the development of educational materials or resources for community members on animal welfare, population management, and responsible pet ownership.
- Collaborate across departments to support organizational goals, program evaluation, and process improvements.
- Support shelter teams by assisting with physical intake, on shifts and helping with medication administration when needed.
- Represent the organization professionally and positively in the community, with pet owners, and with partner groups.
- Respond to public inquiries about intake, SNAP, and TNR in a timely and compassionate manner.
- Maintain accurate program records and compile monthly statistics and written reports.
- Provide on-call support to foster homes and/or shelter caregivers in the case of an emergency during a one-week rotation, as needed, but approximately once every 12 weeks.

EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum three years of experience in a shelter environment is considered an asset.
- Experience in PetPoint is considered an asset.
