YOUR SUPPORT WILL OPEN DOORS!

AARCS EDMONTON EXPANSION PROJECT!

Be part of this exciting milestone and help AARCS open a shelter in Edmonton for homeless animals!

%

RAISED OF $400,000

Animals across our province are depending on us. It’s become more apparent that our Edmonton shelter, North Haven, is pivotal for us to expand our reach and help more animals in the future.

Our initial timeline will shift due to COVID-19, but our end-goal remains the same. We are still in need of your generosity and support to get this project moving in a forward direction.

Be part of this exciting milestone and help AARCS open a shelter in Edmonton for homeless animals!

WILL YOU help us, help them?

AARCS is a leader in the animal welfare community and Albertans turn to us for help. As many as 4,000 animals come through our programs each year. We have exceptional adoption and community support programs with some of the highest standards of care in the industry. This provides us with the ability to grant second chances to thousands of homeless animals.

Expanding to Edmonton will allow us to help even more animals by providing a space in the North for our rescued animals and an operational hub for our Edmonton volunteers.

AARCS has leased property in South Edmonton and plans to be fully operational by the end of 2020. Similar to our existing facility in Calgary, we are creating a home in Edmonton for our rescued animals to temporarily lay their heads before moving into foster care, a home-base for our volunteers and a place to collect & store donated supplies for our growing base of foster homes in the area. IN ADDITION, our goal is to house 50-80 adoptable cats and facilitate onsite adoptions. In order to complete the renovation, purchase appropriate housing/kennels for the animals and equip the facility with the required equipment we need your help!

WHY SUPPORT AARCS?

AARCS has a proven track record of performance, fiscal responsibility, and growth management. This has helped us save over 22,000 animal lives since our inception in 2006. AARCS provides the highest level of animal care, including medical management, and has developed industry-leading adoption programs. As a member of Humane Canada and a leader in animal welfare in Alberta, AARCS uses its collaborative relationships to work towards ending animal homelessness throughout our province. In conjunction with our rescue efforts, we offer spay and neuter community initiatives and humane education programs to tackle the root of the problem.  When tragedy strikes in our province, our animal disaster response capabilities allow us to quickly deploy teams where help is most needed.

    Together We Can Change Lives!

These are some of the homeless, forgotten and abandoned animals AARCS supports every day. These sad stories are our reality and the reason why we need your support. It is unacceptable for any animal to suffer. This is why AARCS exists and we will not stand by or turn our backs on those animals. We are here to end animal suffering and help foster a compassionate world for all.

    Progress Report 02

    July 2020

So much has happened since we did our first progress report in February. We had to put the project on hold during COVID lock-down, but we have ramped back up only a couple of months behind schedule and making up for lost time. Things are moving along quickly now and we are excited to share the following with you!

    The following has been completed:

    • We welcomed our Operations Manager, Jamey Blair to the AARCS team on June 1st. Jamey is thrilled to be part of the AARCS team and has already had a busy first month working on plans for North Haven.
    • Our development plans and drawings for the facility are complete and we have obtained our building permit from the City of Edmonton. Demolition is well underway, concrete has been removed for plumbing trenching, old walls and flooring are gone, the ceiling has been removed in the lobby and cat areas and we are working on signage designs. We are thrilled to watch the transformation and look forward to sharing it with you each step of the way!

    Edmonton North Haven

After a lot of planning, we have selected and ordered our animal housing for the facility. Including 26 cat banks, 12 dog runs and 3 isolation banks. The cat enclosures that will be used at North Haven comply with Capacity for Care ensuring animals have the space needed to be happy and healthy during their short stay at our facility. These kennels will provide a temporary safe space for animals that arrive at North Haven, will help reduce the spread of disease and help reduce the stress of the animals staying at the shelter.

THANK YOU to Petsmart Charities of Canada who has provided us with a $30,000 grant to assist with the purchase of our isolation kennels for North Haven!

    Edmonton Kennels

    Happening Soon and Currently Underway:

    • Krawford Construction has been busy getting construction underway at North Haven. Trenches have been dug for the plumbing throughout the building and for the dog runs, and work will be underway to update the electrical, and HVAC including a new make-up air unit.

    • The old floors have been removed and soon Garage Frontierswill be replacing all the floors. This will include epoxy flooring for the quarantine, inventory, and storage areas as well as brand new durable flooring for the reception and cat adoption rooms.

    • New Doors and locks have been donated by Spalding.

    • Bathrooms have been demolished and new bathrooms, including an accessible bathroom, are being built.

    • The yard is being cleaned up with overgrown trees trimmed, grass mowed and weeds picked. We are looking for a landscaping company who might be interested in donating some time to assist with the exterior of the building. As well as snow-removal services for this coming winter.

    • We hope to be painting in August. We have decided in order to save some funds we will paint ourselves, but would love to have some experienced painters to assist! If you have experience and would like to help please email [email protected]. We are also looking for paint donations or discounts in AARCS colours.

    • We have received estimates from several local companies to provide signage for North Haven and are currently working on design concepts.

    • We will be recruiting for two Animal Care Attendant positions funded through the Canada Summer Jobs grant as well as a Volunteer Coordinator in the coming months. Stay tuned for more information!

    • Our team is actively seeking donations of items for North Haven, a list of these items can be found on our website. If you are interested in donating, please contact Jamey Blair at [email protected].

    Edmonton Opening Doors Matching Campaign

We are so excited to have launched a matching campaign to help raise critical funds for North Haven! Three amazing AARCS supporters, Heather Waddell, the Chartrand Family, and the Pritchard Family have come together to match donations dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000! We are eternally grateful for their support and confidence in our amazing team who, despite the unpredictable delays of the pandemic, are still working hard to ensure the North Haven project moves ahead and is ready for animals in 2020. This is an unbelievable opportunity for us to raise the funds necessary to complete the renovation and purchase equipment necessary to help even more animals in 2021 and beyond. To find out more or to donate, visit aarcs.ca/edm-2020/open-doors.

We have reached $198,826* of our $400,000 goal!
