2017 Summer Intern - Student Registered Veterinary Technologist

Full-time (37.5 hrs/week) Contract Position starting in June 2017

Supervised by the Medical Manager

Start date: June 2017 (for up to 16 weeks)  |  Hour rate: $15.50/hour


POSITION SUMMARY: Student RVT will provide exceptional patient care and will work under the direct supervision of a RVT and DVM in surgery (preparation, monitoring, and recovery), dentistry, radiology (digital and dental), emergency medicine, pathology and laboratory sampling and handling.

ABOUT US: ALBERTA ANIMAL RESCUE CREW SOCIETY  is a registered non-profit charity with a mission to improve the lives of animals by rescuing and rehoming abandoned and abused animals. We help over 2500 animals a year and provide much needed programs to our community including: Spay/Neuter Assistance, Humane Education, and Emergency/Disaster Response. Our Safe Haven facility and Animal Hospital is located in Calgary and is a temporary and quarantine holding facility for many animals as they transition to a new life. It is also our head office for operation. This facility supports our vast foster home and volunteer network.

ABOUT YOU: This position best suits someone who has a genuine interest in and concern for the well-being of animals and demonstrates empathy and compassion for all animals.  The role will include a variety of tasks related to the care and maintenance of animals, including but not limited to examining and monitor health of animals, administering medications and treatments, collecting samples and perform diagnostic testing, preparing animals for surgery, assisting lead veterinarian during surgeries and providing post-operative care of animals. Candidates must possess good verbal and written communication skills, including a moderate level of computer software proficiency. The position requires some heavy lifting, pushing and pulling which would require an individual with ability to maintain a level of fitness.

QUALIFICATION:

  • Was registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year
  • Intends to return to school on a full-time basis as student in RVT program during the next academic year
  • Student in secondary, post-secondary, or technical program related to RVT
  • Is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under Immigration & Refugee Protection Act.

POSITION SUMMARY: The role of the Summer Intern is to support the AARCS staff and volunteers in maintaining a clean, safe and healthy facility for the volunteers and animals and providing administrative support.

  4. Be comfortable handling both cats and dogs. This includes feral cats and shy, timid or reactive dogs.
  5. Maintain highest standard of care in a fast paced, high volume environment.
  6. Confident and diligent in surgical preparation, patient monitoring and recovery for various surgical procedures.
  7. Confident in surgery, radiology (digital and dental), dentistry, emergency medicine, laboratory sampling and handling, exceptional patient care and a good understanding of infectious disease.
