Wanted: Shelter Attendant Summer Intern

2018 Summer Intern Contract Position

Shelter Attendant

Start date: June 2017 (9 weeks internship)

Monday-Friday 8am-5pm

Position Summary:

The role of the Summer Intern is to support the AARCS staff and volunteers in maintaining a clean, safe and healthy facility for the volunteers and animals and providing administrative support.


ABOUT US: AARCS is a registered non-profit charity with a mission to improve the lives of animals by rescuing and rehoming abandoned and abused animals. We help over 2500 animals a year and provide much-needed programs to our community including: Spay/Neuter Assistance, Humane Education, and Emergency/Disaster Response. Our Safe Haven facility and Animal Hospital is located in Calgary and is a temporary and quarantine holding facility for many animals as they transition to a new life. It is also our head office for operation. This facility supports our vast foster home and volunteer network.

ABOUT YOU: This position best suits someone who has a genuine interest in and concern for the well-being of animals and demonstrates empathy and compassion for all animals.  The role will include a variety of tasks, some physical labour, including at times working directly with the cats and dogs. Other duties as assigned could include office administrative work, cleaning, assisting with events, sorting donations, etc. Candidates must possess good verbal and written communication skills, including a moderate level of office software proficiency. The position requires some heavy lifting, pushing and pulling which would require an individual with ability to maintain a level of fitness.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Between age of 17 and 30
  • Was registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year
  • Intends to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year
  • Student in secondary, post-secondary, vocational or technical program
  • Is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under Immigration & Refugee Protection Act.

Wanted: RVT Summer Intern

2018 Summer Intern Contract Position

Student Registered Veterinary Technologist

Start date: June 2017 for up to 16 weeks

37.5 hours per week

Position Summary:

Student RVT will provide exceptional patient care and will work under the direct supervision of a RVT and DVM in surgery (preparation, monitoring, and recovery), dentistry, radiology (digital and dental), emergency medicine, pathology and laboratory sampling and handling.

Looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Registered Veterinary Technologist with interest in Animal Welfare and Shelter Medicine.


ABOUT US: ALBERTA ANIMAL RESCUE CREW SOCIETY is a registered non-profit charity located in Calgary, Alberta facilitating over 2500 animal adoptions each year. Our mission is Changing Lives Through Kindness. AARCS Veterinary Hospital is a fast-paced, high volume clinic designed specifically for animals in our care. We are not open to the public. Our aim is to ensure AARCS animals are provided with the highest standard of humane medical care and treatment. The clinic is fully equipped including, digital and dental x-ray, two surgery suites, isolation, pharmacy and laboratory. We perform a variety of treatments on a daily basis, including routine care, emergency medicine and surgery, such as spay/neuter, ortho, dentistry. Our medical department works closely to provide a holistic approach to shelter management, animal care and adoption.

ABOUT YOU: An RVT, preferably with two years experience and a genuine interest in animal welfare.  Having both a love of people and animals, you are naturally optimistic, positive, friendly, and approachable.  Working with on-site Veterinarians and the Medical Team, you pride yourself on exceptional patient care and are confident in surgery, dentistry, radiology, emergency medicine, pathology and laboratory sampling and handling.

You enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, including high volume surgery and hospitalization and isolation for infectious disease. You have highly developed cooperation, collaboration and problem-solving skills.  Your love of animals extends to shy, reactive and feral animals in which you can handle with confidence and care. At heart, you strive to see every animal provided with the highest quality medical care. Your strengths include impeccable medical records, teamwork and adaptability to change.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Genuine interest in animal welfare and shelter medicine.
  2. Registered RVT  in the province of Alberta and member in good standing with ABVMA.
  3. Preferred minimum of 2 years experience.
  4. Be comfortable handling both cats and dogs. This includes feral cats and shy, timid or reactive dogs.
  5. Maintain highest standard of care in a fast paced, high volume environment.
  6. Confident and diligent in surgical preparation, patient monitoring and recovery for various surgical procedures.
  7. Confident in surgery, radiology (digital and dental), dentistry, emergency medicine, laboratory sampling and handling, exceptional patient care and good understanding of infectious disease.
  8. Highly developed cooperation, collaboration and problem-solving skills.
