The Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society rescued a dog this past week with a large metal hunting trap on her leg. A few concerned Albertans called about a stray dog that was dragging a large metal trap on her front paw in the countryside between Red Deer and Edmonton. The German Shepard cross was in so much pain that she avoided all attempts for neighbors to catch her. AARCS skilled rescue team headed out and were able to locate and surround the terrified dog and finally able to catch her using a humane dog trap. She was rushed to Calgary where veterinarians sedated the animal to remove the large metal trap and tend to her injuries. She is now recovering in foster care.

Thankfully, AARCS got to this dog in time and it looks as though her leg will be saved, however she is not out of the woods yet and only time will tell if she will get full feeling back in her paw. Only a few months ago, AARCS rescued another dog whose leg was badly damaged by a leg-hold trap in Southern Alberta. That dog had to have her leg amputated and she is still recovering in foster care due to the severe injuries sustained by a leg-hold trap, which severed her leg at the hock.

AARCS believes there should be a ban on these barbaric traps that are non-specie specific and are brutally painful for any animal (domestic or wild) that might be caught in them, not to mention if a child stumbled into one. ?We are very happy we were able to rescue this dog, but we wonder how many are not found and suffer the endless torture of these barbaric devices,? says Deanna Thompson, Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society?s Executive Director.

The Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society is a non-profit registered charity whose mandate is to rescue abandoned, abused and surrendered animals. If you would like to donate towards the care of the dogs, please visit their website at www.aarcs.ca
